The Amazing Son In Law Chapter 39
Charlie took a seat alongside Claire and Loreen, with Clinton Tucker sliding in next to Loreen.
Immediately upon sitting down, he smiled and inquired, “Loreen, I heard you came to Aurous Hill to work at the Emgrand Group?”
Loreen nodded, replying, “I just started my job.”
Clinton Tucker grinned, saying, “What a coincidence! My father works at the Emgrand Group as the deputy general manager of a department. I can ask him to look after you in the future.”
At this revelation, several people at the table gasped, exclaiming, “Gerald, your father is the deputy general manager at the Emgrand Group?”
“Yep,” Clinton Tucker confirmed with a nod. “He was promoted just last year.”
Someone quickly chimed in, “The deputy general manager’s annual salary must be several million, right? That’s impressive! No wonder your family is so wealthy!”
Clinton Tucker chuckled, “Several million is just the base salary. My father holds significant power and has additional income streams as well. The Emgrand Group is currently involved in a hotel project, which means he could earn at least 10 to 20 million from that.”
A male classmate sitting across from him interjected, “Gerald, I also want to join the Emgrand Group. I’ve submitted my resume several times without any response. Can you ask your uncle if he might recommend me?”
Clinton Tucker nodded enthusiastically, “Sure, just send me your resume on WeChat later, and I’ll have a word with him.”
Charlie couldn’t help but frown. He hadn’t been aware that Clinton Tucker’s father was a senior executive at the Emgrand Group.
This is getting interesting. He decided he should text Doris Young later to ask her to let Clinton Tucker’s father go.
Deliberately, he asked, “Clinton Tucker, if your father is so well-connected at the Emgrand Group, why hasn’t he helped you get in?”
Clinton Tucker sneered dismissively, “What do you know? There’s no point in joining the Emgrand Group. A father-son relationship can’t be hidden. If I went in, I’d be under constant scrutiny.”
With an air of arrogance, he added, “So I don’t even consider the Emgrand Group. I’ve started my own building materials company. Eventually, I’ll collaborate directly with the Emgrand Group through my father and secure all the contracts for their materials.”
“Oh my gosh!” someone exclaimed. “You’ll make a fortune, right?”
Clinton Tucker scoffed and said, “It should be decent, you could say I’m looking at earning thousands a year.”
He then purposefully glanced at Charlie, asking, “Charlie, what kind of work are you doing now? Spending your time washing clothes and cooking after marrying into the family?”
Laughter erupted around the table.
Charlie replied calmly, “Every day, aside from washing clothes and cooking, I also have to drive my wife to work and give her back massages. Life is quite fulfilling.”
Clinton Tucker’s anger was practically palpable. This guy had the audacity to act so self-satisfied; he really was shameless!
Suppressing his rage, he clenched his teeth and retorted, “Charlie, I didn’t expect you to be so content being a stay-at-home husband!”
“What else can I be?” Charlie replied casually. “I haven’t stolen or robbed anyone. Living off my abilities as a husband, why shouldn’t I feel at ease?”
The classmates were taken aback.
They had seen shameless people before, but none quite like this!
What amazed them more was that everyone was still envious!
After all, Claire was stunningly beautiful. Many people would dream of being supported by someone like her!
Envy, jealousy, and frustration filled the air!
If given the chance to support a beauty like Claire, who would care about being the son-in-law? Being a son-in-law is still winning at life!
Clinton Tucker was left speechless.
At that moment, Douglas’s wife, Lily Lewis, suddenly appeared on stage.
After thanking everyone for their kindness with a warm smile, she continued, “Thank you all for the many gifts today. Douglas and I truly appreciate it. To express our gratitude, we’d like to announce the details of the gifts now. Thanks once again!”
Since it was the opening ceremony, announcing the gifts was a key part of the event.
Initially, Douglas had hesitated to do this, but he didn’t have much say in the matter, so he let Lily Lewis take control.
However, many of their classmates weren’t surprised, they all had a competitive mindset and wanted to see who gave what, allowing them to judge how their old classmates were faring in life.
Lily Lewis began calling out names.
“Thank you, classmate Jack Brown, for the $1,000 red envelope!”
“Thank you, classmate Bella Walsh, for the pair of gold ingots!”
“Thank you, classmate Ola Rivers, for the jade Pixiu!”
“Thank you, classmate Clinton Tucker, for the $10,000 red envelope!”
Most of the earlier gifts, whether red envelopes or other presents, were mostly valued around $1,000. When it came to Clinton Tucker, however, his $10,000 red envelope astonished all the classmates.
For just an opening ceremony, a $10,000 red envelope seemed excessive!
Many people looked at Clinton Tucker in awe, praising his generosity.
Clinton Tucker felt proud, believing he had secured the top spot among his classmates.
Then Lily Lewis announced, “Thank you, Charlie and Claire, for the old painting!”
At these words, laughter erupted in the room!
An old painting? It couldn’t be worth more than a few dollars, right?
These two were exceptionally stingy! Douglas had opened this lavish restaurant and hosted a banquet costing hundreds per person; here were Charlie and Claire, dining for free while presenting an old painting? Didn’t they worry about being ridiculed?
Clinton Tucker couldn’t help but sneer, “Charlie, you can afford a BMW 520 and even modify it. Why did you only bring such a worthless item as a gift for our classmate’s restaurant opening?”
Charlie smiled faintly, “You don’t know its background, so how can you label it as worthless?”
Clinton Tucker scoffed, “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re trying to pull. You bought that old fake antique to pass it off as something valuable, hoping to confuse people about its worth!”
He then said assertively, “Tell me the truth: how much did you pay for that old painting? A hundred or eighty dollars?”
Charlie smiled slightly, “That painting is worth more than everything anyone else has given here today!”
“Hahaha!” Clinton Tucker was the first to laugh, saying, “You’re talking big without thought! I gave a $10,000 red envelope, and with more than 20 classmates present, that’s over $20,000 each. Are you claiming your painting is worth more than $30,000?”
Charlie replied with a smile, “You undervalue it.”
“Ahaha!”
The entire class burst into laughter.
Everyone felt Charlie was simply trying to show off!
What kind of nonsense was this? An old painting valued at tens of thousands of dollars? Who did he think he was fooling?
At this moment, Lily Lewis on stage also looked down on him and curiously asked, “Student Charlie, whose ancient painting did you give? Can it possibly be worth tens of thousands?”
Charlie replied calmly, “It’s by a painter from the Dutch Golden Age, not very famous.”
Lily Lewis laughed, saying, “Oh, how coincidental. My father is an appraiser of cultural relics and quite authoritative. His name is Lawson Lewis, anyone who knows about antiques should be familiar with him, right?”
Loreen exclaimed, “Lawson Lewis? The expert on cultural relics Lawson Lewis? I remember him, he’s appeared on Television! Is he your father?”
Lily Lewis smiled and confirmed, “Yes, he is my father. He’s upstairs right now. Would you like me to call him down to appraise Charlie’s painting?”
Clinton Tucker stood up, saying loudly, “Then I’ll ask Lily to bring uncle down to help us assess it. If Charlie’s painting truly exceeds the value of all the gifts today, I, Clinton Tucker, will eat this entire table right here!”
