The Amazing Son In Law Chapter 1
The Amazing Son In Law Chapter 1
The luxurious villa of the Wilson family was ablaze with light.
Tonight marked the 70th birthday celebration of Lady Wilson, the matriarch of the family.
A cluster of grandsons, granddaughters, and sons-in-law presented her with generous gifts.
“Grandma, I know you love tea. This century-old Pu’er tea brick is worth $500,000, and it’s my gift to you.”
“Grandma, I heard you practice Buddhism. This jade Buddha, carved from Hetian jade, is valued at $700,000…”
Lady Wilson gazed over the array of gifts, her laughter echoing with joy. The atmosphere was filled with happiness.
Suddenly, Charlie, Lady Wilson’s eldest grandson-in-law, spoke up, “Grandma, could you lend me a million dollars? Mrs. Lewis from the welfare home has uremia and needs money for treatment…”
The entire Wilson family fell silent in shock.
Everyone turned to Charlie, their expressions incredulous.
Was this live-in son-in-law really so audacious? Not only had he come empty-handed for the birthday celebration, but he even dared to ask Lady Wilson to lend him a million dollars?
Three years prior, the late Mr. Wilson had insisted on marrying Charlie to his eldest granddaughter, Claire. At that time, Charlie had been broke, almost resembling a beggar.
After their marriage, Mr. Wilson had passed away, and since then, the Wilson family had sought to rid themselves of Charlie.
Yet, Charlie remained unfazed by their scorn, continuing to live as the family’s son-in-law.
His request for money today was driven by desperation.
Mrs. Lewis, the woman who had taken him in and saved his life, was suffering from uremia. Either dialysis or a kidney transplant would cost at least a million dollars, and he had no choice but to ask for help.
He thought that given the occasion of Lady Wilson’s birthday, she might be generous enough to assist him.
But unexpectedly, the jovial Lady Wilson scowled, her demeanor shifting drastically.
She hurled the teacup in her hand onto the floor and shouted furiously, “You fool! Are you here to celebrate a birthday or to ask for money?”
Claire dashed forward, trying to calm her grandmother. “Grandma, Charlie didn’t mean any harm, please don’t be upset.”
As she spoke, she attempted to pull Charlie away from the situation.
At that moment, Claire’s cousin Wendy sneered, “Sister, just look at the kind of husband you’ve chosen! My fiancé, Gerald, only gave Grandma a Hetian jade Buddha, and you let your husband come empty-handed, then ask Grandma to lend him money!”
“Exactly! Charlie, we are both grandsons-in-law of the Wilson family, yet you, the eldest, are a complete disgrace!”
The voice belonged to Gerald White, Wendy’s fiancé, from a prominent local family.
Though Gerald was set to marry Wendy, he couldn’t shake off the dissatisfaction of seeing a goddess like Claire married to someone like Charlie.
“It would be best if this useless person left our Wilson family at once!”
“Exactly! He’s brought shame to the Wilson name!”
“I dare say he’s just pretending to ask for money, only to ruin the Lady’s birthday party!”
Seeing the entire family united in their disdain, Charlie clenched his fists in frustration.
Had it not been for the medical expenses for his savior, he would have left this hostile environment without a second thought.
However, remembering the lessons his father had imparted since childhood about the importance of kindness and gratitude, he swallowed his pride and said to Lady Wilson, “Grandma, saving a life is a great virtue. Please show mercy.”
Someone scoffed in response, “You think you can play tricks on me? If you want to save someone, figure it out yourself. You have no right to expect me to pay for your responsibilities!”
The speaker was Harold, Wendy’s brother.
The siblings, often resentful of Claire’s superiority, seized upon any opportunity to deride Charlie.
Embarrassed, Claire stepped in and explained, “Grandma, Charlie lost his father when he was eight. It was Mrs. Lewis who raised him. He is simply trying to repay her generosity. Please understand…”
Lady Wilson’s expression darkened. “Help him? The only way I would do that is if you divorce him and marry Mr. Jones. Then, I will give him a million right away!”
The Mr. Jones mentioned by Lady Wilson was Wendell Jones, who had been courting Claire. The Jones family held significant influence in Aurous Hill, far exceeding the Wilson family’s standing, and Lady Wilson had always hoped to align with them.
Just then, the housekeeper stepped forward and announced loudly, “Mr. Wendell Jones has sent a birthday gift! A Buddha amulet carved from old pit jade, valued at three million dollars!”
Lady Wilson’s expression brightened as she exclaimed, “Bring it here! I want to see it!”
The housekeeper quickly presented a green jade Buddha amulet, prompting gasps of admiration from everyone present.
The amulet was a stunning green, perfectly clear, with no impurities, a genuine top-notch piece.
Gerald White felt embarrassed in comparison after gifting the Hetian jade Buddha. He had not anticipated Wendell Jones’ generosity toward the Wilson family.
Lady Wilson joyfully held the jade Buddha amulet, exclaiming, “Oh, Mr. Jones is truly thoughtful! If only he could become my grandson-in-law, I would be the happiest of all!”
Turning to Claire, she asked, “What do you say? Do my terms interest you?”
Claire shook her head firmly, “Grandma, I won’t divorce Charlie.”
Lady Wilson’s face darkened with fury as she snapped, “You refuse to show me respect! You are choosing to remain with this useless person! He is not welcome at my birthday party!”
Disappointment flooded over Charlie regarding the Wilson family. At that moment, he could no longer bear to stay there. He turned to Claire and said, “Claire, I need to go to the hospital to see Mrs. Lewis.”
Claire quickly replied, “I’ll come with you.”
Lady Wilson’s voice cut through, “If you leave too, then I no longer have a granddaughter! Take your parents and leave the Wilson family with this worthless man!”
Claire stood in shock, unable to believe the cruelty of Lady Wilson’s words.
Charlie hurriedly told her, “You stay. Don’t worry about me.”
With that, he turned and walked out, not waiting for Claire to process the moment.
Harold laughed mockingly as Charlie left, “Oh, good brother-in-law, you’re just leaving empty-handed? Are you planning to beg for food out on the street? That would really shame our family! Here, I have a dollar left, go buy yourself a bun!”
As he finished, Harold tossed a coin at Charlie’s feet.
Laughter erupted from the entire Wilson family.
With gritted teeth, Charlie left the Wilson family without looking back.
After rushing to the hospital, Charlie went straight to the payment office, hoping to negotiate a delay on the medical expenses for a couple of days.
However, when he inquired with the nurse, he was taken aback to learn that Mrs. Lewis had been transferred overnight to the prestigious Union Hospital in Eastcliff.
Shock coursed through him as he asked urgently, “What is the cost? I will find a way!”
She replied, “A total of three million dollars is required. One million has been paid, but we still need two million. It must be settled within a week.”
“Who paid that one million?” he pressed.
The nurse shook her head, “I’m not sure.”
As Charlie pondered this surprise, he turned around to be confronted by a man in his fifties, wearing a black suit and sporting gray hair.
Their eyes met, and the man bowed deeply, saying, “Young Master, you have suffered for all these years!”
Charlie’s brow furrowed as a wave of recognition washed over him. He coldly asked, “Are you Stephen Thompson?”
The man looked surprised and replied, “Young Master, you still remember me!”
Keeping his composure, Charlie remarked, “Of course, I remember! I remember each one of you! You forced my parents to take me away from Eastcliff and flee. During that time, my parents died unexpectedly, leaving me an orphan. What do you want from me now?”
Stephen Thompson spoke with anguish in his voice, “Young Master, when your father passed away, the Master was heartbroken. He has been searching for you for years. Now that you’re here, come back with me to see him!”
Charlie retorted coldly, “Go away. I have no intention of ever meeting him again.”
Stephen Thompson persisted, “Young Master, do you still harbor resentment toward the Master?”
“Of course,” Charlie stated firmly, “I will never forgive him.”
“Ah…” Stephen Thompson sighed, “Before I came, the Master expressed that he anticipated you might not forgive him.”
Charlie said “Then he should be aware of his actions!”
Stephen Thompson continued, “The Master knows about your hardships over the years and wishes to offer some compensation. If you’re unwilling to return, I will purchase the largest business in Aurous Hill and give it to you. Furthermore, here is a card, the password is your birthday.”
As he spoke, Stephen Thompson presented a luxurious black gold Citibank card to him.
“Young Master, there are only five of these cards in the entire country.”
Charlie shook his head and said, “Take it back, I have no interest.”
Stephen Thompson insisted, “Young Master, your lifesaver still requires two million for medical expenses. If you can’t pay, their life might be in jeopardy…”
Charlie frowned, “Are you plotting against me?”
Stephen Thompson quickly refuted, “I would never do that! Accept this card and it will be enough to cover the cost.”
Charlie inquired, “How much is on this card?”
“The Master indicated that this card serves as your allowance, not much, just ten billion in total!”
